2. Company overview

What is Wild Magic

This is the foundational / core reason for the existence of Wild Magic.  We aim to create a haven for wildlife which will provide habitat for all native species possible to thrive.  This will comprise carefully planned areas of native woodland, meadow areas, wet / marshy areas, and so on – to be designed by a wildlife expert and in partnership with other rewilding centres of expertise.

The activities and Contemplation Area (to go with Natural Burial service , below) with places to sit, wildflowers etc will all be incorporated into this wild, biodiverse, habitat rich  site.

The whole site will be open to the general public to learn about the work we do.

There will also be lots to see and do during their visit, with activities, games, experiences and interactive pursuits,  all designed to teach about wildlife and sustainable living while also having fun.

When sufficient funding is available, it is anticipated that there will be an Information Centre where people can see and find out about all sorts of sustainable technologies, see examples and experience how they work – whatever the future holds for power generation, plastic free living, or anything that technology may make available.

Hopefully companies on the forefront of technological advances may have space to demonstrate what they do.

Finally other sustainable charities may also have a presence here.

As much as possible will be provided, so the public can leave with far greater  knowledge and understanding than they arrived with, and be able to find out answers to practical questions.

In the fullness of time Wild Magic will be able to take ex offenders straight from prison, employ them according to their skills and interests (in all aspects of running the enterprise), and also provide in house training in emotional intelligence and meditation / mindfulness, both of which are designed to give them the space to heal from the inside and discover their own self expression as people, rather than the labels they may have experienced in the past. (See Appendices for more information)

These will include:

– A Visitor Centre, in time it will include a cafe or restaurant (staffed by our trainees / apprentices and supplied by our produce)

– Meditation Centre

– Natural burial site

– Workshops, courses and retreats (day and residential),

– A variety of ‘Off the shelf’ gardens available to buy, installed with comprehensive maintenance and after care service

– In the future we will be able to tender for contracts in many aspects of land management

– Produce from our activities, eg honey from our hives, eggs from our hens, harvest from our plants

– We may have a garden centre specialising in selling and supplying native or wildlife rich species of plants, flora & fauna

– The work we do with ex offenders (rehabilitation and training service)

USP and Company Ethos

The Wild Magic approach is completely unique:

– It aims to provide a real, practical alternative to the standard ‘consumer’ lifestyle that ordinary people can adopt

– No nonsense information , a central place pulling together research and making it accessible to everyone

– Somewhere that future technology can be showcased

– The aim is to make being sustainable FUN and interesting, rather than all doom and gloom,

– Lots to see and do, so learning about nature, wildlife and biodiversity are also fun and interesting

– Aimed at adults and children alike

– Accessible to inner city, low income families / schools, not just the affluent

– A place where ex offenders can come straight from prison to get ready for a fulfilling life in society   The unique training and development Wild Magic will offer will provide healing from past trauma so they can move on without the shackles of the past holding them back

– Once set up, Wild Magic will be entirely self funding, due to its unique services which all provide an income

There are two important aspects of our IP:

1. The Wildlife gardens that will be on sale to the public.  There is a great deal of expertise embedded in this service,, including the design and creation of the variety of gardens on offer,  creation and maintenance on site, and the expertise required for installation and after-care support.  Also the sophisticated software that is currently in development to support this, such as a resource website for customers, an app for after care and an interactive CAD programme for customers to create their own dream gardens.

2. The specific details of the training that will be given to the ex offenders, in addition to any vocational training they receive.  This includes their emotional intelligence training, other communication and ‘soft skills’ training, and our specially designed mindfulness training.  These different aspects have all been geared towards our specific audience

As time goes by, Wild Magic will become a hotbed of innovation and creativity, with its own unique areas of expertise and contribution, similar to CAT (The Centre for Alternative Technology).  Therefore, in addition to the above, further IP will soon be developed, in the form of, for instance:

– different wildlife friendly installations to enhance different settingss, other than just domestic gardens

– we will experiment with different crops and technologies (in partnership with other organisations, or giving our unique set of resources to aid other research)

– Any other technological or agricultural discoveries or advances that we make or have a part in developing.

– The ongoing data and innovations we make in the fields of wellbeing & nature, recidivism, and healing childhood / early life trauma, as a result of our own work in these areas

Initially it is expected that WM would adopt a ‘Buddhist’ ethos.

NB ‘Buddhism’ as used here has nothing to do with religion whatsoever. Wherever ‘Buddhist’ or ‘Buddhism’ is mentioned in this business plan or appendices it is as a code of ethics (honesty, kindness, respect) and behaviour (for example daily meditation, diet) rather than as a religion. It is in no way intended to promote or encourage Buddhism, as a religion, over any other religion.

All religions will be treated as equal and encouraged.

For more information please see Appendix A – Operating Ethos

Company structure (Type of organisation)

Wild Magic will be a limited company, with charitable status (ie social enterprise or Community Interest Company (CIC)) (advice being sought). Wild Magic is wholly owned by the Owen Smith Trust which has been established as a charity since 1960.  Owen Smith Charitable Trust is registered with the Charity Commission, Charity No 209671.

Wild Magic currently has no site address but as soon as a site is purchased that will be the address.  Until that time, the Owen Smith Charitable Trust address will also be the Wild Magic address.

One of the trustees of the Owen Smith Trust will live on site and manage the enterprise.

Mission statement

Wild Magic combines vision and inspiration, the old and the new, to bring human beings back to our wild roots.   This happens through family fun and providing opportunities and new meaning for those most in need in our communities.

(The old by embracing nature, old crafts and old sustainable ways of life, with the new –  innovation, new technologies and fresh modern ideas).

It does this in four ways:: by protecting and enhancing wildlife, promoting quality of life through enjoyment of the natural world, raising awareness of the climate emergency, and by providing real world opportunities, education, training and employment, for less privileged / marginalised members of society.

Objectives & social impact

The company’s goals and ‘raison d’etre’ are fourfold

1. Environmental

The most obvious objective, as it is the first thing anyone will see. Wild Magic consists of a large site, ideally over 100 acres, given over to wildlife. It will contain elements of rewilding, woodland, meadow, but not wholly consist of any. As well as supporting and providing habitat for a multitude of native wildlife, it aims to be a demonstration of how land can be productive for humans as well as wildlife. We hope to show that one does not need to exclude the other.

With that in mind, we will have lots of wild patches, but also wildlife gardens of various sizes, various food growing areas, fruit trees & bushes, and bee hives. We will also research and discover more ways of utilising land so it serves human needs without shutting out the other species with which we share this planet.

Wild Magic will also be open to the public and will provide a fun day out for adults and children alike, welcoming families, couples and individuals. In addition we will host retreats, workshops and other income producing and awareness raising / educational events.

2. Wellbeing

A growing body of empirical evidence is revealing the value of ‘nature experience’ for mental health.

Please see Appendix B for details and links to research that provides empirical evidence of the close link between wellbeing and access to nature.

3. Educational

There are many gaps in the knowledge of the general public, such as:

Walk down an average English residential street where the houses have front and back gardens, and more often than not you will find, where it could be alive with bees, butterflies and a riot of birdsong, there is little to break the silence except the hum of distant traffic.  No problem – after all, wildlife belongs in the countryside.  But think again – with  our ancient (biodiverse) hedgerows reduced to a tiny fraction of what they once were, and liberal use of agricultural chemicals having driven our wildlife from the countryside – Where do they have to live now other than domestic gardens?  Even foxes, who are woodland creatures, are reduced to city vermin, having to raid domestic bins to survive.

Most people simply don’t know how much ordinary people can do. Places left to nature are seen as ‘scrub land’ because they are messy. The trend is to tame everything, including our gardens – weed & feed our lawns to remove any wild flowers, mow every two weeks to keep it nice and short, clear up any twigs or dead leaves, and crop garden hedges to a neat box shape. There is no room for nature here. Hedgehogs need corners that are left alone, a bed of leaves to hibernate under in the winter, and gaps in fences to roam from garden to garden. There is no space given in most gardens to log piles or nature corners, and garden fences are kept too neat and new, right down to the ground, or even beneath it. This is not done on purpose, people just don’t know and we like to have well tended gardens.

It could be a very different story. Wild places could be valued and left as habitats, people could let their hedges or shrubs grow a little, leave a patch of lawn unmown til July pr August to encourage wild flowers, and leave some leaves on the ground over winter to provide cover.

David Attenborough in his new film specifically talks of the need for ‘rewilding’ and George Monbiot has been giving this message for years. Yet the UK is still one of the most nature depleted countries in the world. According to a new study by the Natural History Museum, ‘We have led the world in degrading the natural environment’. According to the RSPB, more than 40 million birds have disappeared from the UK’s skies since 1970 alone, and things are continuing to get worse, not better.

Wild Magic is set to change that. It is all centred around nature and wildlife, and by having displays of wildlife friendly gardens as well as a variety of wildlife gardens actually available to buy ‘off the shelf’, it will give a real live examples of what wildlife gardens of different sizes can look like. As well as forest gardens, there will be low maintenance / no work gardens etc, allotment or food gardens, ornamental gardens – all designed to make provision for wildlife as well as people. With lots of info to take away, new technologies to experience and try out, and new green innovations available to buy, the aim is to raise awareness of just how much one person or one family can actually change the direction of the climate chaos we are currently heading towards.

Scientific research is now conclusive -in less than a decade, the planet will reach a series of ‘one way doors’ (David Attenborough) leading to irreversible climate change, habitat loss and the sixth mass extinction, which if allowed to continue will mean just one thing – the ultimate extinction of the human race.

This is accompanied by an astonishing ignorance among most people of the scale, the urgency, and what they can do about it, if anything. While the plight of nature is becoming more and more well known, the ‘powers that be’, politics, global corporations etc, continue to fund the destruction of forests and promote choices that perpetuate the same behaviour, making change seem almost impossible for normal individuals.

The ‘green lifestyle’ takes a little bit of trouble – cumbersome and unhygienic water saving methods, having a food bin (discarded food can smell), time wasting recycling, while we remain inundated with products that all produce a huge environmental impact – tons of plastic, palm oil etc. Without enormous amounts of research, time and trouble sourcing alternatives, and expense, it is quite frankly impossible to live sustainably in the modern world . People are inherently good and want to do the right thing.  But the options that the general public are offered are very limited. Added to that, a conscience has a price tag in our society – free range, ethical or sustainable are always more expensive (and yet it should be the other way round).

Wild Magic aims to change that by giving us choice, as well as much needed information on the true environmental credentials of many large organisations.   Wild Magic will aim to be a bit like Amazon.com, in that it aims to be is a one-stop-shop enabling a new sustainable way of life, as easily and effortlessly, and cheaply, as possible.

Living sustainably is still very much a ‘middle class’ occupation, while there are millions and millions of people who simply don’t know (and can’t afford to care)  about things like avoiding plastic, reducing food waste, animal welfare in meat production, how to grow food, and any other sustainable behaviour. WM aims to be accessible and interesting to everyone – regardless of background, wealth, education, or age. We hope that by building a community of people who also share our vision, we will be able to influence decision making so that environmental impacts begin to be reflected in the price, making local, sustainable, unwrapped, free range, products available to the majority of people rather than just the ‘affluent middle classes’.

Again, it is currently only affluent people who can afford to care about animal welfare, because it has a price tag. No welfare should have a price tag.  Factory / intensive farming is only a relatively recent phenomenon (mainly since the 1960’s) and it is simply not necessary to cause the suffering of billions of animals to feed humans. There are many options for eliminating animal suffering and treating them with respect, with minimal change to our shopping and eating habits. We hope to explore and advocate some of these options in the fullness of time.

(Could mention here vision of something like ethical consumer database so people can easily check sustainability of ingredients widely used, searching by product or brand, eg a point system based on carbon footprint, ingredients used, etc).

4. Providing actual opportunities for deprived / underprivileged people to turn their lives around

Prisons, arguably, are intended to 1 punish, and 2 rehabilitate. Here we are concerned primarily with their failure to do the latter. This is evidenced by the ongoingly high recidivism rates – ‘In the UK, 75% of ex-inmates reoffend within nine years of release, and 39.3% within the first twelve months.’ (UK Research & Innovation with University of Birmingham, ‘Breaking the Cycle?   Visitation and Recidivism in the UK’ https://gtr.ukri.org/projects?ref=ES%2FK002023%2F1). In 2011, Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke described the British penal system as ‘one whose record in preventing reoffending has been straightforwardly dreadful.’ And this is at a cost to the UK economy of an estimated £7-10 billion per annum (not including costs to victims which are far higher).

The reality for anyone coming out of prison with a colourful list of offences on their DBS record, is that 99% of employers are not interested.  So for any ex offender, no matter how determined they are to stay out of trouble, the odds are stacked against them from the outset.  With their friends and associates invariably all being of that world, it is no wonder then that a life free of crime must be very hard to maintain, with even the best of intentions (see Appendix X).

Added to this, are the reasons why they took to crime in the first place.  For many that is rooted in childhood – eg trauma, physical, sexual or psychological abuse, endemic poverty, parents in addiction, the care system, or other factors which typically leave people scarred for life.  For others, it happens in adolescence – being in a gang, alcohol or drug abuse – most of these root causes remain unaddresssed throughout their life, including while in prison.  How then can proper rehabilitation really be achieved, without a programme that tackles someone’s deep-seated unconscious programming, traumas, their learned assumptions and core beliefs about themselves and the world – the paradigm that shapes their world view and all their life decisions. It seems to follow that if the twin problems of employment or occupation coupled with a psychological intervention or mindset based training and support, ex offenders would have a far better chance of leaving crime behind for good.  This is precisely what Wild Magic sets out to provide.

Measurable outcomes (to evidence the impact)

Click here to see one of the many studies showing the link between mental health and access to nature

1. Environmental impact –

Numbers of native species the site attracts can be monitored and measured. Also the number of different habitats can be measured, ie insect hotels, bird / bat habitats & nesting boxes, hedgehog provision, etc.

2. Wellbeing –

This can be measured through well-being surveys & questionnaires before & after, if this impact needs to be measured … but visitor numbers and how they choose to engage with our services (ie for fun, contemplation etc) will probably be enough evidence, combined with the evidence already in circulation of the effect of nature on well-being.

3. Educational –

This can be measured in a number of ways – we will of course know how many people attend workshops, visit the visitor centre, engage in educational activities. We will also welcome school visits and encourage them to adopt some practices on school land. We will also have wildlife gardens for sale so we will measure how many customers actually buy these and have them installed, and how they engage with after care service & support to maintain them.

4. Supporting ex offenders / (later) homeless people –

These will be measured in the standard way, with numbers of people placed into employment or self employment after their time with us, as well as personal testimonials. We can also follow them up 1, 3, 5 and 10 years later to ensure ithat results have been long term or permanent (predicted).

Industry analysis

Leisure – visitor park, family day out, fun activities, visitor’s centre

Retail – shop, sales of goods, gardens, turf, products produced by trainees etc

Services – sale of services eg garden design, natural burial services (working with undertakers) land management etc

Hospitality – residential courses, sales of food & drink

Education – schools, adult learning, workshos, training centre for ex offenders

Customer / donor analysis

There are three main customer groups:

– Families with children, eg those who currently go to Thorpe Park, Legoland etc. – for leisure – Professional couples – for leisure primarily, or personal interest

– Schools / schoolchildren – for education

– Learners, anyone who wants to learn, either specific things (residential retreats we offer) or general environmental / wildlife / ethical consumer / climate change

– Those who may follow or support on social media – since now one can achieve monetisation through Youtube, Instagram, online courses, even sites like Patreon or Ko-fI which enable tiny but regular donations from many individuals, there are potentially millions of ‘micro funders’ which would be the public that absorb online content, maybe without ever visiting us. A good example of a Patreon supported enterprise is the ever popular Time Team, that previously ran for years on TV . It still does several large digs a year funded entirely by its Patreon community.  It offers each person options for support from £5/m to £100/m, each tiered to give a different range of benefits or ‘rewards’ such as behind the scenes footage, closed interviews with key people, etc.

Trainees include initially ex offenders (within 2 years of leaving prison)
– When possible, will widen to include other adults in need (depending on decision of the Board of Directors) eg homeless, and others.
– later it is hoped this might widen to include excluded young people 16-21

These are groups to whom we will have an obligation to report regularly, or other obligations depending on their reqirements.

These customers will be concerned with identifying ex offenders who might benefit from our programmes, and any statutory financial support available to take them on

This will be later when we have ex offenders who are skilled and ready to undertake external work, eg grounds maintenance  or land management contracts.

Competitor analysis

These include –

Probably unlikely as Wild Magic will hopefully reach a wider audience, and different people will donate for different things.

Also, currently the pot for rewilding and CO2 reducing projects is increasing, due to the need to mitigate or offset our emissions during the transition to a lower carbon economy.

Finally, within a short time Wild Magic will be self funding due to its unique position of providing products and services, so we will be much less reliant on donations.

Wild Magic, being one of a kind, will appeal for its own unique set of reasons so has few competitors in this category

Because of the way Wild Magic is structurerd, there will be few if any direct competitors, either locally or nationally

As has already been mentioned there is currently a paucity of organisations that provide support or employment to ex offenders.

Why Wild Magic

– Unique

– Addresses environmental and social issues with a seamless, integrated solution

– Accessible to everyone

– Designed to provide real change, not just a small individual site, or a greenwash

– Self funding once set up

– Can be replicated in other areas

– The training provided will add to the data currently in existence about rehabilitation of ex offenders

Wild Magic is achievable as well as magical
